How do Bonusly points work?

Learn how your monthly allowance points and earnings points work.

Updated over a week ago

Bonusly has two point balances, and they work differently.

  • Giveable points are for recognizing others. They refresh every month and expire if you don't use them.

  • Redeemable points are what you earn when someone recognizes you. They never expire and you spend them on rewards.

Understanding the difference helps you get the most out of both.

Giveable points

Giveable points are your recognition allowance. The points you use to recognize your colleagues. Every month, your company gives you a fresh allowance to distribute. When you recognize someone, you attach points from this balance.

  • Monthly refresh. At the start of each budget period (usually the 1st of the month), your giveable balance resets to your full monthly allowance. If you had 20 points left from last month, those expire; they don't carry over. The fresh allowance replaces whatever was left.

  • How the balance is calculated. Your giveable balance is your total monthly allowance minus the points you've already given this period. If your monthly allowance is 100 and you've given 65 points so far, you have 35 left.

  • Allowance boosts. Your monthly allowance can grow permanently through Points Boost. A special reward where someone redeems their earned points to increase your recognition allowance. The boost is added on top of your base allowance every month from that point forward. If your base allowance is 100 and you've received a 25-point boost, your total monthly allowance becomes 125. The boost never expires.

  • Manager allowance. Managers receive an additional allowance based on the number of direct reports they have. This extra allowance works just like the base; it refreshes monthly and expires at the end of the period if unused.

Example. Say your total monthly allowance is 150 (100 base + 25 boost + 25 manager allowance). On the 1st, you start with 150 giveable points. By the 20th, you've recognized several colleagues and spent 110 points, leaving 40. On the 1st of next month, those 40 expire and you start fresh at 150 again.

Redeemable points

Redeemable points are the points you've earned from peer recognition, celebrations, incentives, or any other source. This is the balance you spend when you redeem a reward from the rewards catalog.

  • They never expire. Unlike giveable points, redeemable points stay in your balance indefinitely. There's no monthly reset. You can save them up for a larger reward or spend them as they come in. It's entirely up to you.

Exceptions: Redeemable points may expire after a predetermined period of time if the company admin establishes the rule. To encourage the user to use their points, for example, the redeemable points will be reset on December 31.

  • How you earn them. Every time someone recognizes you, the points attached to that recognition are added to your redeemable balance. Points from celebrations (birthdays, work anniversaries, new hire welcomes) also go here. So do points from company-awarded bonuses or incentives.

  • Spending them. When you redeem a reward on any gift cards, charitable donation, curated gift, company exclusive, or Points Boost, the cost is deducted from your redeemable balance. If you have 500 redeemable points and redeem a $25 gift card worth 250 points, you'll have 250 left.

  • Lifetime earnings. Bonusly also tracks your lifetime earnings. The total number of points you've ever received, regardless of how many you've spent. This gives you a long-term view of the recognition you've accumulated over time.
