Team Requests helps fix missing or inconsistent manager relationships for organizations that do not rely on an HRIS feed for that data in Bonusly. Employees and managers can enter their team structure, who their manager is, and (where supported) that they are a manager and who their direct reports are subject to your company’s approval rules or auto-approve.
Best for: Free Plan (does not have HRIS.) Audience: End Users and Managers
What you can do
You can set up or update who your manager is. If your company allows it, you can also identify yourself as a manager and add or adjust direct reports so your team structure in Bonusly matches reality. Together, that keeps reporting, spotlights, collaboration map, and other manager-aware features accurate for you and your team.
Tips:
Use your real reporting line so recognition, feedback, and workflows stay accurate.
Do not set yourself as your own manager that kind of relationship is invalid and may be blocked or rejected.
If you need to remove a manager or handle an unusual case, follow what the form allows or ask your admin—options can depend on company configuration.
Find team setup and send a request
Use these steps when Bonusly does not yet have your manager or direct reports on file, and your company is not using an HRIS or other automated user sync for that structure.
1. Open the Team menu and start a request
In the main navigation, find Team (the team icon). When this workflow applies, you will usually see a badge on the Team icon so you can spot that something needs attention.
Select Team to open the Team panel.
At the bottom of the panel, select Add your manager.
If you do not see a badge or Add your manager, your admin may have turned the feature off, or your manager data may come from an integration.
2. Work in the “Add your manager” modal
Selecting Add your manager opens a modal.
Search: Use the search field to find someone (the placeholder may read something like Find someone...).
Switch between manager and direct reports: If you are adding direct reports instead of your manager or you need to switch modes, use the link in the lower-left corner of the modal on screen. That control toggles the modal between adding your manager and adding your direct reports. Use the same corner link to switch back when you need the other mode.
Confirm your manager: After you select a person as your manager, the modal asks you to confirm that they are your manager. Use the actions shown (for example Yes, add if they are correct, or No, switch if you need to pick someone else) before you continue.
Add direct reports: In direct-report mode, follow the instructions in the modal (for example searching and adding each person who reports to you).
3. Submit the request
When the modal reflects the changes you want, submit the request using the primary action (for example Submit).
Your admin can then approve or reject it, unless your company uses auto-approve.
4. After approval: use “Manage team”
When your request is approved, Add your manager is replaced by Manage team in the Team menu.
If you are a manager, the Team panel may also show a Direct reports list under Team, so you can see who reports to you without leaving the sidebar.
Select Manage team to open the full Manage team page. Everyone who uses this flow lands on the same kind of page, whether you are an individual contributor or a manager. On that page you will see your structure at a glance, including sections such as My manager and My direct reports. From there you can make further changes (for example updating your manager, adding or removing direct reports, and submitting new requests when your reporting line changes).
What happens after you submit
If your company does not use auto-approve for your request (or for that type of change):
Admins are notified that there is something to review in Team Requests under User Management.
They can approve or reject your proposal individually or, when available, handle multiple requests at once with bulk actions.
When your request is approved, your team view and related functionality—such as feedback spotlights—typically update right away in Bonusly.
If your request is rejected, you may ask your admin if you are unsure why it was rejected.
If your company uses an HRIS integration
Some companies manage managers and teams through an HR system (for example Rippling) or through SCIM, SFTP, or Merge integrations. In those cases:
You might not see Team Requests for changing managers in Bonusly.
Your manager may be updated automatically when HR data changes.
If you think your manager is wrong, your internal HR or IT team is usually the right place to start. Kindly reach out to your company admin
FAQs
Can I change my manager again while a request is pending? I made a mistake what should I do? If you can still edit the pending request, update it. Otherwise, contact your admin so they can reject the incorrect request or guide you on the next step.
Who can see my request? Admins who manage Team Requests can see submissions as part of reviewing and approving changes. Avoid including sensitive personal information beyond what is needed for the relationship update.
Why don’t I see Team Requests at all? Your company may manage structure through an HRIS or integration, or admins may have turned the feature off. Ask your admin if you need a manager update.
